Four Weeks in First Grade

These kiddos are practically pros at being first graders!

This week we have worked on polishing up our readers workshop routine.  Students have been picking out independent books and then:
1. Reading each book independently
2. Reading each book to a partner
3. Completing a text-to-self connection book sheet for each book

Soon, we will start the final step, which is retelling to an adult.

In science we have been learning all about composting, and the importance of lessening the amount of food waste that ends up in landfills.  On Wednesday, we came together as a first grade and constructed our first grade traveling vermicomposting bin!  The worm bin will visit our classroom on Tuesdays.  Most of the students are very excited to get up close and personal with some Red Wigglers!

In math we worked on learning the number combinations that make ten.  We call them Friendly Tens! We also explored using ten frames and played some games to get more familiar with them.

In writers workshop, students are now not only illustrating and writing full stories, but they've also started revising to make their stories even better!
